The thing is that both WhatsApp and WeChat are mobile first apps. Your WeChat chats and all other data is stored on your phone rather than on WeChat servers. So if you want to see your chats on a desktop, WeChat should first be running on your phone which is essentially the server. All messages will ultimately be received and routed via your phone app. That’s why your phone should not only be on but also have access to internet.

When you first signed up for WeChat it verified only your phone number. You don’t have a username or password. So the only way of logging into WeChat Web is by scanning a QR Code from your phone, which acts as the authentication.

Where is the WeChat QR scanner?

Scanning someone's QR code is the fastest way to add them as a contact on WeChat. You could try typing their phone number really, really fast, but this way's much better!

To show your own QR code: From the Me tab, tap your avatar, then My QR Code.

Open WeChat, tap the "+" button in the upper-right corner, then choose Scan.

What is QR code in WeChat?

WeChat QR Codes are colorful barcodes, which can be shared on social media. Every WeChat user has a unique QR Code. This QR Code is personal and their design can be changed.

Plus, one can also add people quickly to WeChat groups through QR Codes. That is, upon scanning the WeChat QR Code of an account, you can easily follow them. Hence, the use of WeChat QR Code for promotional purposes in China comes as no exception.

One can also make payments through WeChat QR Code. QR Code-based payments today are widely used. They are secure, quick, easy, and reliable.

In this article, we will explain all the use cases in detail. But let’s start with how to find your WeChat QR Code.

Which app can I use to scan WeChat?

Not everyone in China uses the App Store or Wandoujia, but nearly everyone uses WeChat. As a result, Tencent is in a unique position to use WeChat as a means to direct users to its own app store. That’s exactly what it’s doing with these new WeChat-specific QR codes: if you own an iPhone, you can hover WeChat’s internal scanner  over a WeChat QR code and you’ll be directed to the App Store. If you own an Android device, you can scan the same WeChat QR code and you’ll be directed to Tencent’s app store. That’s one download that Tencent just gained, and one that every other app store missed out on.

What do developers have to gain from WeChat QR codes? Again, almost everyone with a smartphone in China uses WeChat. If you’re slapping QR codes on swag items for your latest marketing push, you’ll no longer have to hope that your users own iPhones, or direct them to some random-ass Android app store. Just smack on a WeChat QR code and voila – download accomplished!

Wechat users get to have their fun too. The special QR codes can be sent to friends on the messaging app, and also posted on to ones Timeline-esque WeChat Moments feature. Once again, since these QR codes are platform agnostic, almost anyone can scan them successfully. As a result, WeChat QR codes have potential to “go viral.”
